Catalyst Around Us- Engineering Design STEM Module 2023

Learning Objectives:

•Observe the reactivity of different types of paper in methanol and oxygen with and without Platinum black.

•Compare the time taken by different paper to start igniting.

•Learn the sequence of reactions that led to burning of the papers.

Conduct internet search for catalysts used in:

a. Natural processes

b. Industrial processes

c. Pollution Treatment

Describe the catalysis in following points:

a. The catalyst

b. Reactants

c. Desired Products

d. Conditions

Share findings with your classmates

•Use heterogenous acid catalyst to hydrolyze methyl acetate into acetic acid and methanol

•Record pH as an evidence for the acid formation.

•Infer that the catalyzed reaction occurs at the surface of the heterogeneous acid catalyst.

•Observe that the catalyst can be reused.

•Observe that multiple catalysts speed up a specific reaction.

•Compare the reactivity of Copper granules, copper turnings and iron fibers for the oxidation of ammonia under certain conditions.

•Compare the rate of poisoning of different catalyst.

•Observe the photo-catalytic degradation of methylene blue by titanium dioxide and UV light.

•Investigate photocatalytic degradation by finding change in methylene blue concentration over time.

•Determine the effect of following variables on the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue:

a.Catalyst concentration

b.UV light intensity

c. pH

ENGINEERING DESIGN PROJECT OBJECTIVES:

•Apply concepts of Environmental Catalysis to collaborate for a team Project.

•Design, Construct, Test, Evaluate and redesign prototypes of an Environmental catalytic system.

•Make records of the entire design process.

•Summarize the procedure and results in a final report.
